Years ago, I used to read a lot of romance novels. As I got older, I started reading suspense/thriller novels and never went back to romance. However, recently I decided I needed some lighter reading from time to time and read a few romance novels. And I was disappointed in every one of them. They were full of cardboard characters, disalogue that sounded the same no matter who was speaking and relationships that didn't develop in a believeable way.Imagine how surprised I was when I started reading Sweet On You. This story of Katya, whose career in the military is short-circuited due to PTSD, and Cam, the bullrider who knows the end of his bullriding days is drawing near and can't see a life without it. Each character in this book is a 'real' person, with a distinctive voice. And as we follow the plot we witness both Katya and Cam learning to let go of the past to grab for the future. In the process, they fall in love and this happens so naturally, it seems believeable when they also fall in bed together. This is a romance but it is so much more. This is a story of learning to forgive yourself. After all, aren't we all our own worst critic?

Sweet on You Sweet on a Cowboy Laura Drake 9781455521937 Books Reviews
I have loved all of Laura Drake's Sweet series, but Katya and Cam's story will really touch your heart! They both have issues to deal with and have to find ways to heal what is inside them. The fact that it involves a woman with PTSD is very important today with so many of our military coming back with problems. So many focus on the men without a thought that women are suffering too! You can't go wrong with a Laura Drake book!
Katya is a compelling character as a female suffering from PTSD. She's also unique in her gypsy "healing" work that she incorporates in modern medicine. I especially loved the passages that described her healing massages and herbal teas.
The hero, Cam, is likeable. Great writing in the way the sub-plots dovetailed into the perfect resolution for them to work out their careers and lives together.
As always, Drake's writing is vivid and fast-paced.
Laura Drake is a new discovery for me. I started with her book THE SWEET SPOT and could not wait for this second book in the series to come out. She doesn't write fluffy stories. Both these books have been real and full of issues that a reader can care about.
In this book, the heroine (Bree) has lost everything - her confidence, her profession and her happiness. She's making a new start after being cleared of a crime she didn't commit. The hero (Max) is reeling from the death of his father and the knowledge that the ranch he loves is on the verge of financial collapse. My favorite supporting characters were Tia Nita and Wyatt. (I ADORED Wyatt.)
I don't want to ruin the book by giving you all of the story but I will say that everyone's character arc held me. While this book didn't rip my guts out like THE SWEET SPOT, it made me smile and cheer for the characters. The romance between Max and Bree had plenty of sizzle, and the PBR scenes are a delight.
I'm firmly on the Laura Drake cheering squad and can't wait to read the last book in this delightful series.
An aging bull rider hopes to end his career with a bang. A medical officer on leave from the army takes a job as a massage therapist for bull riders to help her work through her PTSD. Falling in love can either make or break their relationship. A lot of emotional baggage and insecurities where you just want to say "stay home."
Laura Drake’s second book in the Sweet series features Bree Tanner, a character traumatized by her past, but determined to make her place in the world without help from anyone. What she’s really looking for is a home, only she doesn’t know that at first. She arrives at a Colorado ranch, scarred physically and emotionally.
Ranch owners and brothers, Max and Wyatt, couldn’t be more different – yet each has grown up in a home without much love or warmth. They face ghosts from the past while trying to financially float a ranch loaded with debt. Max has a tough cowboy exterior, as tough as Bree’s ex-con persona. They each have to show one another their vulnerabilities in order to build a true home undergirded with love and acceptance.
Each character in this book has complex layers that mark Drake’s emotional writing. Her writing is honest, fearless, funny and touching. I very much enjoyed this book and seeing cameo appearances from characters in book one. Looking forward to the next one as well!
As a writer who hasn't been writing, I often look for inspiration in books written by authors I admire. Laura Drake is now one of those writers.
The complexity of the back-story for both the H/H in this novel are anything but cliché, yet snippets let the characters unfold as the plot progresses. The character arcs are masterful.
I read this book a second time -- notebook beside me -- intending to pick up tips on how she handles unique dialog cues, setting, visceral reactions, pops-on-the-page pacing, and steam scenes. Like another author I follow (Jennifer Crusie), I got caught up in the story the second time through. I felt as if I was on-scene with the characters; seeing what they saw, feeling what they felt. I doubt it will be any different if I try this one a third time.
This book is a story about real people and how, when you think all of your life is perfect, a tragedy happens and shatters all the lives involved with the family of a young couple. Everyone handles the bad things that occur in life different ways. Some withdraw, some seem to cope and go on with no effects and some completely shatter and seem bent on destroying all the good there was in the life they had made. All hope and desire are buried and must be forgotten except when a weak moment occurs. Then time goes by and small openings let in new friends and a memory that has stayed in the back of the mind starts to slip back in and you realize maybe happiness may still be open for you. If you are a romantic you will love this story of how a man and woman, if they work to make it, will bloom in spite of the hurt they have gone through. A real Cowboy and his girl story that will make you laugh, cry and feel the love come to life between them.
