Autobiography of baseball legend Jackie Robinson, beginning with his athletic career and dealing particularly with baseball and the first step toward equal participation by African Americans in this great sport.
“I believe that a man’s race, color, and religion should never constitute a handicap. The denial to anyone, anywhere, any time of equality of opportunity to work is incomprehensible to me. Moreover, I believe that the American public is not as concerned with a first baseman’s pigmentation as it is with the power of his swing, the dexterity of his slide, the gracefulness of his fielding, or the speed of his legs.”—From Foreword by Branch Hickey

it was a gift for a friend after we saw the movie. He had read that this was the best biography/autobiography because it was co-wrote by the sports writer in the movie.Product details

Jackie Robinson My Own Story eBook Jackie Robinson Wendell Smith Branch Rickey Reviews
Anyone interested in Jackie Robinson will be interested in this account of his beginning in the majors while it was still fresh on his mind. Note, however, I recommend this edition which has a real cover with a good photo of JR and costs less Jackie Robinson My Own Story
Note there is a less expensive and more attractive edition for sale. For some reason has not yet linked them. You can find it here Jackie Robinson My Own Story
This is a valuable look into the first season that Jackie Robinson played for the Dodgers. When this rare book first came out in 1949, it was officially "as told by Jackie Robinson to Wendell Smith." Smith was a great African-American sports writer who not only followed the integration of professional baseball in 1946 but played a major role in bringing about its occurrence. Smith and Robinson were good friends, and due to segregation they were also compelled to be roommates and dining companions when the Dodgers were on the road.
Smith ghost-wrote a column by Robinson for the Courier and later published this memoir of Robinson's first baseball season. I was interested to learn that they often minimized the negativity of moments, perhaps to attract more white readers and avoid conflicts. An example of this is when they downplay the racial slurs from an opposing time to, "the things the Phillies shouted at me from their bench have been shouted at me from other benches and I am not worried about it."
Although it may be a little rose-colored in areas, his memory of this first season is fresh as it was written shortly after the 1947 season. If you too were captivated by the film 42 last year, this is a great follow-up!
Best book ever!!
This book gave me what I was looking for....history. A time in which I have been extremely interested in researching.
My son had to read a nonfiction book for summer reading. We both enjoyed Jackie Robinson's story. It was age appropriate for a middle schooler.
Great! Very personal and emotional accounting of some of the challenges JR experienced as he broke extensive racial, cultural and societal barriers that existed in this country and in MLB at the time!
